IUI Pregnancy- Solution for Infertility

Sometimes it is seen that nature needs help to start a pregnancy and the doctor can play an important role here by helping the sperm to enter through a fine tube inside the body. This process is called as intrauterine insemination (IUI). It is also known as artificial insemination with the husband’s sperm.

IUI is the process of putting washed sperm inside the uterine cavity with the help of a plastic catheter through the cervix. It is a low cost method which helps in enhancing the fertility in a woman with patent Fallopian tube. The chances of sperm meeting with the egg are increased by IUI.

Simple Treatment

IUI is a simple procedure which does not demand too many precautions. A few minutes of rest is advised post the procedure after which all the normal activities can be resumed. At times medicine may also be administered to support a pregnancy.

Apart from mild pain and spotting on the day of the IUI, there are no major complications. There are around five to ten percent cases of multiple (generally twin) pregnancies. At times a patient tends to respond excessively to medications and produce more eggs, which will lead to a risk of multiple pregnancies. Also there are chances of developing Ovarian Hyper Stimulation Syndrome (OHSS). If this happens, the doctor will recommend cycle cancellation or converting into IVF.

Success Rates of IUI in India

The success rate of IUI is determined by various factors. For instance the reason of infertility is an important factor. It is seen that usually around 80% of the pregnancies will take place within the first three cycles of IUI after which there is a reduction in the success rate. Usually a maximum of three IUI cycles is recommended, however this depends on the age of the patient as well as the cause and duration of infertility Treatment.
